Tips for Creating a Lush and Lovely Bowl of Succulents

If you are looking for an indoor plant that is beautiful, easy to maintain and fun to grow, succulents are what you need. By learning how to make a succulent bowl, you can bring a bit of nature to your home for the cooler months with a minimal amount of effort.

Succulent bowls have become a trend in the last years. Aside from being an easy way to welcome some natural life indoors, they also make lovely décor pieces. And if you go away for the holidays on a business trip, these plants will survive without water for weeks.

Planting Succulents in a Bowl

I love the way succulents look when planted in a raven bowl. In addition to being lightweight, a raven bowl also matches well with a variety of finishes. It is true that planting a succulent in a raven bowl is a little bit more tricky than planting it in a proper plant pot because it doesn't have drainage holes to let excess water out. But that also means you won't have to put a dish under the bowl to collect excess water.

Caring for Succulents in a Bowl

Normally, it is not recommended to plant anything in a container without drainage as this can lead to issues with improper drainage. However, succulents have such low water requirements that you can get away using a bowl, but you will need to use a high-quality potting soil. You will also need to be careful to not to over-water the plants.

The secret to planting succulents in a bowl is not to over-water. Succulents' health issues are often related to overwatering rather than underwatering. So remember not to saturate all the soil in the bowl when you water the plant. If your succulent is looking unhappy and you've watered it in the last few weeks, it is probably feeling drowned.

How to Avoid Overwatering Your Succulent

Once you've planted your succulents in the bowl, take note of how heavy it is. A few days later pick the plant succulent bowl to find out if it is any lighter. Keep note that during dry weather, your succulents may dry out faster than during periods of high humidity. Wait until the bowl feels significantly lighter than when you planted. Then add a little bit of water – you don't need to saturate all the soil! Water the soil just around the base of the succulent and let the plant find the water itself.
